HISTORY
Benin, historically known as the Kingdom of Dahomey, boasts a fascinating history that dates back centuries.
The kingdom was renowned for its powerful army, such as the all-female military - "agojie"and advanced administration. The region played a significant role in the trans-Atlantic slave trade, with Ouidah being one of the major ports.
Benin gained independence from France on August 1, 1960, and has since evolved into a republic with a unique blend of traditional and modern influences.
CULTURE
Benin, a country rich in history and diversity, is shaped by its various ethnic groups and traditions. The primary ethnic groups include the Fon, Adja, Yoruba, Bariba, and Somba, each contributing to the country's cultural landscape.
Voodoo (Vodun), which originated in Benin, remains a prominent aspect of its cultural identity, with elaborate rituals, dances, and the veneration of deities and ancestors.
